What to do if someone you know is showing signs of suicide

What to do if someone you know is showing signs of suicide

  • Be open to talking with the person about suicide in a non-judgmental way.
    • Ask if they are thinking of ending their life.
    • Do they have a plan?
    • Do they know when they plan to end their life?
    • Do they have access to the means that they would use in their plan?
    • Never minimize or shame a person for having these thoughts.
      • Telling someone that they should not feel this way is unhelpful and only serves to make them feel more shame and guilt.
      • Reassure that help is available and treatment can change how they feel.
      • Involve others who can help.
        • Never promise to keep suicidal thoughts a secret.
        • Help them to call their mental health treaters if they have any, or a suicide hotline.
        • If they will not call, please call for them and let someone know of your concerns.
