Session 4: Let’s Talk about Firearms - Improving Lethal Means Safety Discussions Through Improved Self-Knowledge - Friday, September 12, 2025
Description:
Are you seeking to enhance your ability to discuss firearm access and safety with clients, but feel uncertain due to a lack of knowledge on the topic? We invite you to join VA Suicide Prevention Supervisor, VA Suicide Prevention Community Engagement Specialist and Air Force Veteran, as well as a USCCA Firearms Instructor and Marine Corp Veteran to equip you with the tools and confidence to engage in these crucial, life-saving conversations with individuals at risk for suicide.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify common types of firearms and their basic components to improve provider comfort and communication with firearm owning clients.
- Explain the principles of lethal means safety and how they apply to suicide prevention, including safe storage practices and risk reduction strategies.
- Demonstrate effective, culturally competent communication techniques for discussing firearm safety with clients in a nonjudgmental and supportive manner.
