We are proud to share that Journey Mental Health Center’s School-Based Services Program has been awarded a $50,000 Public Health Violence Intervention Grant from Public Health Madison & Dane County.
This funding will allow us to expand our trauma-informed services beyond schools and into community settings where communities and youth have been deeply affected by violence.
This grant will be used to train adults within the Department of Public Health who support youth in these communities using the CBITS (Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools) and HEART (Healing Ethnic and RacialTrauma) curriculums. Along with the trainings, Journey will be leading pilot groups that allow these trainees to experience and get practice facilitating these trauma recovery programs and groups. This pilot will explore the feasibility of running support groups in community centers, building a new model for trauma recovery outside of schools.
“This is part of our effort to build strong partnerships across the county,” said Nelsie Stern, Director of School-Based Services for Journey. “We want to make sure communities have the tools and support they need to help kids heal after traumatic events - especially in places where school-based resources might not be enough or trauma is happening within a community, outside of the school.”
Beyond direct services, this grant strengthens our relationships with local agencies and expands our capacity to respond to community crises with timely and effective mental health support. It's an important step in making healing accessible where it’s needed most.
